Stuyvesant HS News & Views - June 1, 2012

The Stuyvesant Boys’ Handball team enjoyed a great season, finishing second in the City Championship Match. Coach Robert Sandler is justifiably proud of these talented scholar-athletes! The Boys’ Golf team advanced to the first round of the citywide playoffs, and looks forward to next year's competition. Our thanks to Coach (& English teacher) Emilio Nieves for his dedication to both the Boys & Girls' Golf teams at Stuyvesant.

The Speech and Debate Team performed well in last week's National Catholic Forensics Competition, with many students qualifying for elimination rounds. This has been a typically successful year of competition for this powerhouse team and its proud coach, English teacher Julie Sheinman.

In addition to his duties as coach of the Boys' Handball Team, Social Studies teacher Robert Sandler consistently manages to bring fascinating guest speakers to his classes. His NYC History students recently heard from Ms. Roberta Gratz Brandes, author of “The Battle for Gotham” & numerous other books about urban development. They were also treated to a visit by Allen Rosenwach, who discussed the history and mechanics of the hundreds of water tanks his family-owned business, the Rosenwach Tank Company, has placed atop hundreds of NYC buildings.

The American Studies Advanced Placement Course, co-taught by English teacher Hugh Francis and Social Studies teacher Victor Greez, has been focusing on the Vietnam War. They took their students to the Common Ground Art Exhibit in City Hall Park, where they wrote letters to Vietnam War-era soldiers, followed by a visit to the Museum of the Moving Image, where they viewed a film about soldiers' experiences in that conflict. Our thanks to these dedicated educators for the ongoing enrichment they strive to provide to our young scholars.
